We are excited to announce that we are attending the European Carbon Farming Summit. Together with our PATH2CC consortium partners - ELEKS, Juntos Farm, University of Helsinki, and Queen's University Belfast - we will be hosting a workshop titled: “Unlocking European Small Farms’ Access to Carbon Markets” on Wednesday March 18.
About the Workshop
Recent developments in the European Commission’s Carbon Removal Certification Framework (2022–2024) have largely overlooked small-scale farms. This has created a significant gap between EU carbon market mechanisms and on-the-ground farming realities. As a result, most European farms remain unable to benefit from climate transition incentives.
This interactive, solution-focused workshop will bring together farmers, buyers, platforms, public bodies, and researchers to explore how small farms can be effectively integrated into environmental markets in a way that is both financially viable and operationally feasible. Working in small groups and representing various stakeholder perspectives, participants will identify barriers and co-create actionable solutions.
Key challenges we will address:
- How can carbon markets be made financially viable for small farms?
- How can we ensure the quality and credibility of carbon credits and certification?
- How can we attract buyers for premium-quality, locally generated European credits?
- What types of credits should we prioritize - carbon, biodiversity, water, or community-based?
The session aims to:
- Raise awareness of the current limitations of carbon markets
- Generate actionable insights for more inclusive carbon markets
- Contribute concrete recommendations to the EIT Food PATH2CC project
Why Are We Attending?
COVERE² and PATH2CC are deeply complementary initiatives. Through COVERE², agri-food producers receive support not only in meeting CSRD reporting requirements but also in driving sustainability transformation. However, such transformation is only possible at a certain pace and to a certain extent, particularly in sectors like livestock. PATH2CC complements this by enabling both offsetting and insetting of emissions, offering farms additional financial incentives to accelerate their transition.
Together, the two initiatives create a comprehensive pathway: Report – Transform – Offset/Inset
This approach combines compliance, transformation, and revenue opportunities to scale real-world impact.
